Chapter Three
The Lockdown Leap
The apocalypse ticket gathered dust until the year humanity collectively stayed indoors and tried to out-think a virus. The Department of Mild Concern did not file this as an apocalypse, but it did mark it as a rehearsal.
High Astraeus watched as streets emptied, skies cleared, and humans discovered that their homes were both sanctuary and trap. The world shrank to the size of a screen, and social media — now fully grown — became the primary organ of reality.
Some humans baked bread. Some humans learned to garden. Some humans tried to become better people. Many humans simply refreshed their feeds until time lost meaning. The universe took notes.
“They’re practicing for isolation,” said a clerk in the Bureau of Misunderstandings.
“No,” said High Astraeus, “they’re practicing for a world where reality is negotiable.”
Conspiracy theories bloomed like invasive plants. Some claimed the virus was a hoax. Others claimed the lockdown was a test. A few claimed the universe itself was running an experiment. The universe, for the record, was not offended. It was impressed.
The apocalypse ticket was updated:
Humanity capable of global behavioral change under duress.
Note: prefers confusion to clarity.
Potential leverage for future campaigns.
